Webovator Interviewed by State Journal-Register

Posted in RANDOM on February 4th, 2010

A few weeks ago I was interviewed by Dan Naumovich of the State Journal register in Springfield, IL.  The article was printed yesterday, in the paper, and it can also be viewed online at the above link. The topic of the article is different ways small business owners can use Twitter to market their business.

The main goal for my clients using Twitter is to show a human side of their business. I recommend NOT blasting out self promoting links in excess, but instead just introducing yourself, being social, and contributing meaningful information, humorous tweets, and a mixture of helpful links, conversation with followers, and [sparingly] alerting followers to any special sales promotions you might be running. This is a nice way to join the Twitter bandwagon without being one of the ‘bad guys’.

SEO Rap Translated into Tagalog

Posted in RANDOM on September 13th, 2009

Since I have been learning Tagalog, I thought it would be fitting to try to translate the Link Building Rap by m0Serious… It talks about seo and linkbait, and backlinking campaigns. If there are any corrections that need to be made, leave comments below please!

Brad at Chuck payo gumawa kabit,

Kickass SEO Might Be An Obscure Keyword, But I Like It.

Posted in RANDOM, SEO Tools and Apps on May 27th, 2009

Rank Checker is an awesome Firefox Add-on from the folks at SEOBook.  For many months, I was searching for a way to find out where I was ranking for specific keywords.  Then I found it, and I was ecstatic.

If you don’t understand the significance of this, think of it this way:

Say you have a site called Webovater, and you use it to blog about Kickass seo Resources.  And you want to know where it would turn up in the search results on Google, when you searched for that exact phrase.

In the past, you would have to go to Google, type it in, and manually search for your site in each page of the search results, until you FINALLY found it.  There were 10 results per page, so if you were result #1001 for a particular keyword, you would have to click through 100 pages before you found your site.

Who wants to do that?  Not me.  You can now save yourself time, by checking where you rank for MULTIPLE keywords, using this seo tool. What is even cooler is that you can export your results to a .csv file, which is basically a text file that can be opened in any spreadsheet app, like Excel.

So now, you can easily check your ranking on multiple keywords, fast, and save the results to track your changes.  If you notice your site is decreasing in rank, you can then start to make the necessary changes to fix it.

Hope this helps!

What other seo programs and tools are in your arsenal?  Leave a comment, and let us know why you like them/how they help.

Also: It just so happens that Webovater ranks #1 for kickass seo.  Yay.  Obscure?  Perhaps.  But still a small victory that causes me to smile.

Pass the link juice (Pay it forward)

Posted in RANDOM on February 3rd, 2008

Man, I am thirsty. I need a tall glass of iced link juice…

Random thought: I wish I had a million dollars for each time I read the phrase “content is king”

It’ is now my task to add another blog to the mix of random niche sites, spreading myself too thin, “like chocolate pudding scraped across too much ham.”  (That’s a quote from Veggie Tales – Lord of the Beans–don’t ask why).

Most people would say in their first blog entry, “Hopefully this is useful to someone.” Forget that. I say, hopefully it is useful to ME. I have way too many links in my bookmarks so this will be a place for me to store everything that I want to remember to visit again. If you want to link to webovater.com for seo and web design links by all means, be my guest. I will be adding tons of useful resources and links here, and we might just have some guest authors submit some articles from time to time to break the monotony (as if there was any chance of you getting bored, with my dripping sarcasm and witty remarks). But I don’t beg for links from other webmasters. This is 2008. If you put good content up, people will link to it naturally. Spamming might work on a mass scale but it’s annoying, and it’s unnecessary if your site has stuff people want to read.

I liked the Pay It Forward movie. I like the idea that there are still people in this world that are able and willing to help others, and expect nothing in return. However I am not going to help you rank on Google for your keywords and redesign your site for you and optimize your photos for Virtuemart and everything else you want me to do for free, because I have done it before for ‘friends’, and it’s a waste of my time. If you have a decent budget and would like to enlist our services, then by all means send me a request for a quote on your project. But if you intend to keep adding new specifications to the scope of that project and expect me or my developers to tack this on without additional compensation, I advise you to go elsewhere. Been there, done that, and not interested anymore.

If you are new to web marketing, don’t worry, I will start at the very beginning for you. I am not some guru who is going to speak over your head (or ask you for money). On the other hand, if you are a seasoned seo and I say something that is no longer applicable or is just dead-wrong, please call me out on it so that I can stop leading people astray. Like if I were to write how it’s a good idea to cram hundreds of keywords into your pages using a text color that was the same color as the background, I would be disappointed if some of the older seo crowd DIDN’T bite my head off. That said, let’s get to the point, close this introduction, and not turn this into a novella.

Happy reading.

Chris
